Dreams: A Solution for Diabetes

Continuing with our theme from last week, where we explored how God can use dreams to guide and inspire us. This time, we focus on Dr. Frederick Banting, whose dream led to one of the most significant medical breakthroughs of the 20th century—the discovery of insulin.

Dr. Frederick Banting was a dedicated physician and researcher deeply troubled by the suffering of diabetic patients. In the early 1920s, diabetes was a devastating and often fatal disease, with no effective treatment available. Despite his persistent efforts, Dr. Banting struggled to find a solution. One night, on October 31, 1920, after many long and challenging days, Dr. Banting had an extraordinary dream that would change the course of medical history.

In his dream, Banting envisioned a way to isolate the hormone insulin from the pancreas. He saw himself performing a surgical procedure where he tied off the pancreatic ducts of a dog. This procedure would cause the cells that produce digestive juices to die, leaving behind the insulin-producing cells. Banting believed this remaining tissue could be used to create an extract to treat diabetes.

When he woke up, Dr. Banting immediately wrote down the details of his dream and began developing a plan to test his idea. This dream led him to collaborate with Charles Best, and they began experiments on diabetic dogs. One of their key experiments involved a dog named Marjorie, whose condition dramatically improved after receiving the extracted insulin. This success marked a pivotal moment in medical history, leading to the development of insulin as a treatment for diabetes.

Dr. Banting’s dream was not merely a random occurrence; it was a divine revelation that provided clarity and direction beyond his conscious understanding. His experience is a powerful reminder of how God can work through our dreams to guide us towards discoveries that change lives.

Just as God guided Dr. Banting through a dream, He continues to speak to us today. God may give us dreams that inspire us, guide us, and reveal His plans for our lives. Dr. Banting's story is a beautiful reminder that God is always at work, even when we are at rest.

The Blood of the Lamb

As we prepare ourselves to celebrate communion, we have to remember that when we partake in communion, we enter into the fullness of his grace. This communion meal embraces us in God's grace. We become active participants in his story. Every time we partake in communion, we experience the very power of Jesus' redemptive work release into our lives. It has the power to restore us back to the status we had with God before the fall. Hebrews 4:16 says Therefore let us, with privilege, approach the throne of grace, that is the throne of God's gracious favor, with confidence and without fear so that we may receive mercy, for our failures, and find his Amazing Grace to help us in time of need, an appropriate blessing coming just at the right moment. Take the bread and think of the wonderful miracle that you are entering into as you partake.

Body/Bread

While they were eating Jesus took the bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples saying, take and eat, this is my body. We receive your body with thankfulness. (Receive the bread)

Blood/Wine

Then he took the cup and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them saying drink from it, all of you, this is the blood of the new covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Thank you Lord. (Receive the wine)
