The Peanut Story

Several years ago, I heard what came to be one of my favorite God stories. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

George Washington Carver was an agricultural scientist and inventor who revolutionized farming in the southern United States. Born into slavery in the early 1860s, Carver overcame significant racial barriers to become one of the most renowned scientists of his time. He joined Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1896, where he conducted pioneering research and developed innovative farming techniques. His work not only improved the livelihoods of countless farmers but also contributed significantly to agricultural science.

Carver’s achievements were deeply intertwined with his spiritual life. He believed that his scientific insights were gifts from God, often seeking divine guidance in his work. Carver began each day with prayer and meditation, viewing his research as a form of worship. He often spoke of nature as God's creation and believed that by studying it, he was uncovering the secrets of the divine. He once wrote, "I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in." His faith was not just a private matter but a fundamental aspect of his scientific methodology and public persona.

Carver's spiritual life involved his practice of praying on a tree stump in the woods near Tuskegee. Carver would rise before dawn and head into the woods for his "morning talks with God." It was during one of these sessions that he asked God to reveal the secrets of the universe. According to Carver, God responded that the universe was too vast for him to comprehend and suggested he start with something smaller—the peanut. This encounter was a turning point, leading Carver to focus his research on peanuts, which resulted in the development of hundreds of products, including dyes, plastics, and gasoline.

Despite his many contributions, Carver only applied for three patents during his lifetime. This was largely due to his belief that his work was a service to humanity, not a means to personal wealth. The patents he did secure were for cosmetic and medicinal applications derived from peanuts. Beyond these patents, Carver developed over 300 products from peanuts and over 100 from sweet potatoes, including adhesives, oils, and flours. His innovations helped to transform Southern agriculture, providing farmers with sustainable crop alternatives and new sources of income.

Carver's legacy is a testament to the power of faith and perseverance. His life’s work was driven by a profound belief in the interconnectedness of science and spirituality, illustrating how divine inspiration can lead to groundbreaking discoveries that benefit all of humanity.

The Blood of the Lamb

Lord, the night you shared communion with your disciples was the night you were betrayed by Judas, a friend. By receiving this bread, I am receiving forgiveness for all the times I turned my back on you. I choose to extend this same radical forgiveness to my betrayers. I bless and release every person who has ever betrayed me.

Body/Bread

With this bread, your body, I am made whole in body, soul, and spirit. I receive the same resurrection power that caused you to overcome death. Thank you for paying the highest price on my behalf so I could live with you forever. (Receive the bread)

 Blood/Wine

Lord Jesus, I thank you for shedding your blood for the forgiveness of my sins. I receive the life union with you that is found in your blood. I plead the blood over myself and my family. I declare that your blood continually washes me white as snow, frees me of guilt and shame, and delivers me from the clutches of sin, providing a way of escape for every temptation. (1 Corinthians 10:13) It causes death and disease to pass over me and my household. (Exodus 12) Lord, I sever witchcraft from myself and my family with the precious blood of Jesus and receive full life, wholeness and health of body, soul and spirit RIGHT NOW. (Receive the wine)
